KEEPING YOUR RAMEN COLD. KEEPING THE WASTE DOWN.

Fresh ramen has to travel cold, and cold travel takes packaging. There's no way round that. What we can do is choose materials that get a second life, and keep asking whether we can do better.

What's in the box

YOUR PARCEL, FROM THE OUTSIDE IN

Here's what's in the box, and what to do with each bit once you've eaten.

  1. The outer box

    Cardboard. Recycled content, and recyclable again.

    Plain corrugated cardboard with recycled content in the board. Nothing laminated, nothing coated, nothing that stops it going back into the paper stream.

    When you're done

    Flatten it. Household cardboard recycling.

  2. The cold-keeper

    Wool, not foam.

    Your kit sits inside a wool pouch from Kite Packaging. Wool fibres trap air and slow the heat down. No synthetic foam needed. Kite rate it to hold 2-8°C for up to 48 hours, depending on coolants and conditions.

    It's two parts: a wool felt layer and a thin plastic (MDPE) liner.

    When you're done

    Pull the two apart. The wool is biodegradable. Home compost, garden, or industrial composting. The liner is recyclable with plastics at your recycling centre.

  3. The ice packs

    Just enough cold. And yours to keep.

    We pack the number of ice packs the trip actually needs to hold temperature, not extra for the look of it. They're food-safe, and they're not single-use.

    Rinse them, freeze them, use them again. Picnics, packed lunches, whatever.

    When you're done

    Keep them. When one finally gives out, check your council's guidance. Don't put the contents down the sink.

  4. The inner bags

    Recycled where we can get it.

    The bags keeping your noodles and toppings clean use recycled plastic where our supply allows. Old material back in service beats new material every time.

    When you're done

    Soft-plastic / carrier-bag collection at most supermarkets.

WE'RE NOT CALLING THIS DONE

This is where we are today, not where we're stopping. We're a small kitchen in Bristol, and packaging is the part of this business we're least happy with. Chilled delivery is a hard problem and we haven't solved all of it.

We keep looking. Less plastic, more reuse, lighter boxes.
